Is a Face Lift Right for You?

The Surgical Procedure
To ensure your safety, your face lift will take place in a hospital. You will receive general anesthesia. The type you choose will depend on your preferences and James E. Murphy, M.D.’s recommendations. After the anesthesiologist has administered medication, James E. Murphy, M.D. will create several incisions. These will run along your hairline and behind your ears to minimize the appearance of any scarring. Through these incisions, he may remove excess fat, using liposuction or manual techniques. He will also tighten the underlying tissue. If needed, he will suture them into higher positions. Finally, James E. Murphy, M.D. will trim away any loose skin before closing the incisions with sutures or surgical tape.
Recovering from Your Face Lift
James E. Murphy, M.D. will wrap your face in compression bandages to minimize discomfort and speed your healing. In some cases, he may also place drainage tubes just under your skin. These tubes can typically come out the day after your treatment when you see James E. Murphy, M.D. for your follow-up. He will usually remove stitches five to seven days after your surgery.
After your face lift, you will likely experience some swelling and bruising. Medication and ice packs can minimize your discomfort. You should also sleep with your head elevated to control swelling. Most swelling and inflammation typically dissipates within two weeks, and you will probably be ready to resume your normal activities. However, you should avoid strenuous activities until James E. Murphy, M.D. gives his approval.
