Achieve a Clearer Complexion with IPL Therapy*

James E. Murphy, M.D. offers intense pulsed light, or IPL therapy, at our Reno, NV, practice to treat sun damaged skin, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea. A non-invasive treatment, IPL uses pulses of high intensity light to improve the look of skin and requires no downtime for recovery. If you would like to know more about this innovative skin care treatment, or would like to schedule a consultation with James E. Murphy, M.D., contact our office today, and our staff will happily assist you.

Unlike laser treatments, IPL does very little damage to the surface of the skin, so the procedure requires no downtime.

What is IPL Therapy?

IPL therapy is similar to other therapies performed with lasers, but it uses a beam of broad spectrum light that covers many wavelengths, as opposed to one specific wavelength, like lasers. Unlike laser treatments, IPL does not damage the surface of the skin, so recovery time is minimal. James E. Murphy, M.D. typically recommends IPL therapy for patients with mild to moderate skin conditions, and suggests laser treatments to address more severe issues.

The doctor can use a filter on the IPL light to target certain areas, like the pigment (melanin) or blood vessels. The pulses of light will penetrate your skin, reaching the dermal layer and causing damage to the target. The body’s natural ability to repair damaged skin eliminates treated cells, absorbing them to create a more uniform, even skin tone. The light can also stimulate production of the natural protein collagen, which fills in wrinkles and smooths the skin.

What Can IPL Therapy Treat?

A versatile treatment, IPL can help improve many skin conditions. The treatment can remove red or brown spots caused by sun damage and treat rosacea, areas of red blotchy skin. IPL therapy can also reduce severe acne problems, and even close pores. By promoting collagen production, the therapy works to dissipate wrinkles and provide a smooth, even texture to the skin.

How the Procedure Works

When you come into our office for your treatment, the doctor will provide you with protective eyewear. He will apply a gel to the treatment area that will help keep the skin cool during the procedure. Using a specially designed handpiece, the doctor will direct quick pulses of very bright light at the target area. The light will cause a warm sensation, similar to snapping an elastic band against the skin. The size of the target area will determine how long the treatment will take, but the procedure normally takes about 30 minutes. Any discomfort will be minimal, but the doctor will provide you with an ice pack to cool the treatment area, if necessary.

Typically, patients need three to five treatments to see maximum results. The doctor will advise how many treatments you need, and generally schedules sessions three weeks apart.

Recovery and Side Effects

You will require little to no recovery time after IPL therapy. Most patients return to work or other normal activities immediately. You may experience some redness in the treatment area, but most patients find that this side effect fades in a matter of hours. For some patients, especially those treated for severe acne, the redness may take a few days to dissipate.

You will need to stay out of the sun for a few days and use a high-SPF sunblock for at least two weeks following your treatment.
