What to Expect at Your Liposuction Appointment
Administer Anesthesia
Dr. James E. Murphy begins by administering local anesthesia, though this will depend on the complexity of your case, the size of your treatment area, and the type of liposuction being used. Isolate Fat Cells
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Murphy will inject a specialized solution consisting of saline to break down fat cells and lidocaine to numb the area. The solution will also help constrict blood vessels and isolate the fat cells in the treatment area.
Remove Excess Tissue
Dr. Murphy will make small incisions in the area and insert a narrow suction device called a cannula. The cannula is guided around the treatment site to gently suction out unwanted fat cells.

Recovery
Our Lake Tahoe and Reno patients typically undergo lipo on an outpatient basis, meaning they are released later that day to recover at home. You should expect some minor swelling and bruising, but they are temporary side effects and usually start to subside after about a week. Some patients may have residual swelling and bruising for up to a month. Most patients can return to work around five to seven days after their surgery but should refrain from strenuous physical activity for at least a month or until Dr. Murphy clears them. You should be completely healed in a few months.
