Candidates for Liposuction
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and it is not designed to replace healthy lifestyle habits. However, if you are at or near your ideal weight, liposuction may be right for you. Additionally, you must have enough skin elasticity to undergo the procedure. If your skin has lost some youthful suppleness, James E. Murphy, M.D. may recommend Safe Sculpt as an alternative treatment.
James E. Murphy, M.D. can use liposuction on almost any area of the body. However, the most common treatment areas include:
- Upper arms
- Under the chin
James E. Murphy, M.D. may sometimes, also combine liposuction with a more extensive procedure, such as a facelift or tummy tuck. The excess tissue can also be used for fat transfer, including the Brazilian butt lift procedure.
What to Expect During Treatment
To perform liposuction, James E. Murphy, M.D. will first inject a specialized solution into the treatment area. The injection contains lidocaine, so you should experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. It also includes medications to constrict blood vessels and swell the fat cells. This injection makes it easier for James E. Murphy, M.D. to remove the unwanted fat deposits with little impact to the surrounding tissues. Following the injection, he will create one or more tiny incisions. He will insert a small tube, or cannula, to gently remove the fat cells and surrounding fluid.
The length of your procedure will depend on the size of the treatment area. With traditional liposuction you will receive general anesthesia, in addition to the lidocaine infiltrated in the area. You will wear special bandages or garments home which will aid in healing as well as enhance your contouring.
Recovery and Aftercare
After liposuction, you will experience some minimal swelling and bruising. It may take up to four weeks for all of your swelling to dissipate. However, you can typically return to work within a few days. You should resume other activities gradually. Do not engage in strenuous physical activity for several weeks, or until James E. Murphy, M.D. gives his approval for you to return to exercise.
Immediately after your liposuction, you may notice some improvement in your figure. As your swelling subsides, more dramatic results will become apparent. After several months, your body should be fully healed, and you will be able to enjoy a sleeker, more youthful figure. With proper diet and exercise, your liposuction results could last for years to come.
