Are You a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can address the shape, size, and proportions of your nose, as well as your ability to breathe properly. If you are in good health and have any of the following concerns, you may be an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty:
- Wide or flaring nostrils
- An upturned tip
- A hump or depression on the bridge of your nose
- A long nasal tip
- A pinched nose
- A crooked or asymmetrical nose
James E. Murphy, M.D. can also use the procedure to correct a deviated septum or other defects that hinder your breathing.
What to Expect During Treatment
James E. Murphy, M.D. performs our patients' rhinoplasty procedures in a hospital. Before the surgery, you will receive general or local anesthesia. Your procedure will be precisely tailored to meet your particular aesthetic and reconstructive goals. First, James E. Murphy, M.D. will create small incisions to access the nose's underlying structure. If you choose a closed rhinoplasty, the incisions will be located inside your nostrils. If James E. Murphy, M.D. recommends an open rhinoplasty, incisions will be placed on the columella, the soft tissue that divides your nostrils. In either case, James E. Murphy, M.D. will work carefully to leave negligible scarring.
Through these incisions, James E. Murphy, M.D. will alter the cartilage or bone that forms the structure of your nose. In some cases, he may remove tissue to achieve a more pleasing contour. In other cases, he may perform bone or soft tissue grafting to build up the shape of your nose. Regardless of the exact techniques he uses, he will work carefully to protect your breathing and achieve your treatment goals.
Rhinoplasty Recovery and Results
For the first several days after your procedure, you will likely experience some swelling and discomfort. You should sleep with your head elevated. Mild pain medication and ice packs can minimize your discomfort. You will attend follow-up appointments at our office to periodically check on your healing.
Swelling should start to dissipate within a few weeks, although you should still avoid strenuous exercise until you receive approval. As swelling goes down, you will start to notice the results of your rhinoplasty. It can take several months, but when the final results do appear, you will enjoy a greatly enhanced appearance and improved self-esteem.
